Bad Reichenhall The Bavarian State Ministry of Finance, Regional Development and Home Affairs and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art have been looking for "local treasures" in non-governmental museums.100 outstanding "local treasures" were found and awarded last Friday in a ceremony of the Bavarian State Government in the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche (Court Church of All Saints) of the Munich Residenz (royal palace).Among them is the Old Salt Works in Bad Reichenhall with its historic chain of ladles."We only applied with a rather inconspicuous centuries-old chain, but at the time it contributed to a revolutionary technical improvement in brine extraction," explains Peter Botzleiner-Reber, head of tourism at the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine and the Old Salt Works. The idea came from the town archivist of Bad Reichenhall, Dr. Johannes Lang, and local historian Andreas Hirsch. And so the technical skill of the sculptor Erasmus Grasser came to late honours, because it was he who carried out the urgently needed modernisation measures in the Old Saltworks in 1507.Until then, the brine had to be transported upwards with buckets by means of a long human chain so that it could then be transported to the brine houses to make salt."With this chain creature by Grasser, which was not very susceptible to breakdowns, the productivity of the saltworks could be increased considerably, which was important for the development of the city and for the good mood of the ducal owners," says Botzleiner-Reber.The award by Minister of State Albert Füracker and Minister of State Dr. Marion Kiechle helps the hitherto rather insignificant chain of scoops to receive the public attention it deserves.
