Old Salt Works Bad Reichenhall temporarily closed

Due to the increasing spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 in the Berchtesgadener Land, a new general decree comes into force today. This states that the Old Salt Works in Bad Reichenhall must also close for the time being.

Based on the legal requirements and an ongoing risk assessment, we will decide on a reopening date, which will be announced on our website

We hope that the measures taken will reduce the number of cases in the district and that we will soon be able to welcome you as our guests again. Good luck!

Since today you can take part at the guided tours through the Old Salt Works again.

In order to ensure the protection and health of our guests and employees, we have taken certain measures and laid down rules of conduct in a hygiene concept.

We have reduced the group size per tour from 35 to 23 people. For a visit to the Salt Mine Berchtesgaden, every visitor needs a mouth and nose protection that he/she has brought along. We recommend to buy tickets online, so that you can avoid waiting times. Further Conditions of Conduct can be found in our GCC.

We are very pleased to welcome you again in the Old Salt Works Bad Reichenhall!

Bad Reichenhall Old Salt Works and Berchtesgaden Salt Mine still temporarily closed

In accordance with the announcement of the Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care and the Bavarian State Ministry for Family, Labour and Social Affairs of 16 March 2020, we hereby follow the general ruling and shall continue to keep the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine and the Old Salt Works Bad Reichenhall closed for visitors, as already implemented since 10 March 2020.

Precautionary closure of our excursion destinations Bad Reichenhall Old Salt Works and Berchtesgaden Salt Mine:

On account of the increasing spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, the company Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG is closing its two excursion destinations in Berchtesgaden and in Bad Reichenhall to visitors with effect from 10 March 2020 until further notice.

This constitutes a precautionary measure to protect visitors and staff, who come into contact with many hundreds of persons on a daily basis. This has been a very difficult decision for us to take. The uncertain situation, which is changing on a daily basis, has however prompted us to take this step.

As one of the largest salt producers, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has the responsibility of ensuring the ability to maintain supplies. This also means minimising any possible risk of infection. In addition, this measure is intended to help actively prevent the spread of the virus, while simultaneously contributing towards the responsible protection of society as well as employees and staff.

Online tickets for the tour through the Salt Mine or the Old Salt Works that have already been booked will automatically be refunded by us. The same applies to booked events. If you have any further questions in this relation, please contact us by telephone under +49 (0)8652 6002-0 or send an e-mail to You will find current information on and as well as on Facebook and Instagram.

Based on ongoing coronavirus risk assessments, a decision will be made as to when is the right time for a reopening. We shall inform you about this through our homepage and other regular media channels. We are already looking forward to welcoming you again as our guests.
